Eye Care and Health

As humans, our eyesight is one of our most precious tools in order to live a fulfilling and complete life. After all, without it functioning at its highest level, we can miss out on things ranging from spectacular scenic views to the intricacies in the very faces of those we love. Eyesight that is functioning at a lower level can lead to frustration, anger, and in extreme cases crushing despair. In order to prevent this, we must take steps to maintain our eyesight on a day to day basis. Here are but a few ways in which we can do this.

Maintain Regular Physical Exams

This may seem like an odd way to keep track of our eyesight, but maintaining regular physical exams on a consistent schedule can impact your vision in surprising ways. Diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure can lead to vision issues down the line.

Keep Track of Early Warning Signs

If you begin noticing even the slightest changes in your vision quality, you should contact your doctor immediately, as these may intensify over time and lead to more serious and unchangeable issues down the road. Some things to notice are: double vision, hazy vision, or straining to see in low light conditions. Even something as common as mild floaters should not be treated lightly and should be addressed as soon as possible.

Frequent Exercise

Everyone should be doing this anyway, as frequent exercise can lead to a lengthy and healthy life. But you might be surprise to learn that it has a hand in our eyesight as well. Simple frequent exercise like walking or jogging can reduce the risk of age-related vision issues by up to 70 percent.

Maintain A Healthy Diet

Eating healthy also plays a large role in eyecare. Antioxidants found in many foods have been known to reduce the risk of cataracts. Antioxidants can be found in simple things like fruits and vegetables. By having fish on a regular basis that is rich in omega 3 fatty acids may also reduce the risk of macular degeneration.

Smoking has many clear dangers, not the least of which being a lessening of eyesight quality. People who smoke come at greater risk of developing macular degeneration, cataracts, uveitis, and many other health issues.

Long story short: protect your eyes at any cost. Of course, following these steps does not fully guarantee that zero eyesight issues will pop up in your lifetime, but it significantly reduces your chances of contracting a sight-inhibiting and crippling eye problem in your twilight years.
